A few more landscape sketches

I kind of lost momentum with the iPad sketching, and went back to the real paints. Here are the three that I thought turned out the best from the last few months. I have had the pleasure of teaching some classes in the BYU illustration program this fall, and one of those classes was a landscape class where we went out plein air painting as a means of studying light and atmospheric perspective and then applied those principles to illustrations. I did the top image in that class. It must have been a nice spot because a lot of the students got a good sketch there too. Kind of surprising since it's Utah Lake...not known as a very picturesque spot. I have realized that I really like yellow and blue together. Almost as much as yellow-green and purple.

  3. I love these paintings. Especially the middle one. The lighting is beautiful coming over the hill and hitting the water.

  4. Thanks for commenting on my blog, I appreciate. And thanks helping me understand color better. I just did a landscape that did not go so well, but I pulled out my Zion's notes and am confident my next one will be much better. Love your landscapes. And The Magnificent 12 paintings are really exciting. Jealousy abounds when it comes to your composition, characters, and cloud painting ability.

  7. I am an artist and I was just at Education Week. I saw the top painting in Gallery 303 and really liked it. I have just started painting plein air so I am especially interested in looking at others plein air work up close.
It is quite a challenge for me to do simple strokes of paint and have it look like something when standing back. You manage it beautifully in your paintings.
